One of the essential experiment projects for ship-model researching is self-propelled experiment, from which thrust and torque of Propellers under certain speed can be measured, and by analyzing Influencing Factors of propulsive efficiency , we can easily obtain the comprehensive performance under the combination of main engine, ship hull and propellers. Self-propelled experiment for ship-models with 2 or 3 propellers has become a regular one, however, research of self-propelled experiment for ship-models with more propellers has not carried out widely. With the development of modern marine technology, such research has gradually become a research focus.This paper is carried out on the basis of experiments of ship-model with 4 propellers whose experiment process is as follows: first, we test the open water performance of propeller models by means of open water experiment for the ship model with 4 propellers; second, we obtain resistance curves through ship model resistance test; last, we analyze the affection of propellers arrangement to propulsive efficiency by carrying out self-propelled experiments with propellers at different positions , and we obtain the optimal arrangements. This paper consists of three parts which are as follows:(1) Research on open water test of propellers. We obtain both experimental results of open water performance curves by means of open water experiments for propeller B5-105 and one of MAU series and calculation results of the same propellers by using calculation method based on lifting surface theory. Then we compare both experimental and calculation results to the charts and they agree well which proves the reliability of the calculation program.(2) Research on ship model resistance tests. ship model resistance test is a regular test project whose task is for us to obtain resistance curves. It is necessary for analyzing self-propelled performance.(3) Research on ship-model self-propelled experiment. We get 18 experiment plans through orthogonal experiment method, however, because of the installing position conflicting, we can only carried out 15 terms of them, through analyzing the results of which, we obtain the optimum arrangement of propellers.The intension of this research is to fill a domestic gap in self-propelled experiments of ship-model with four propellers, to accumulate valuable experiences and to provide reference for further research.
