Matrix converter is a novel power converter with a new topology, it can realize the transform from AC to AC straightway. Compare to the traditional electric power converter, it has many strongpoint, such as: it can dynamic respond rapidly, without the need of large reactive energy storage components, it draws sinusoidal input currents and allows the input fundamental displacement factor to be set at unity or freely varied regardless of the load power factor. Besides these, it is capable of performing frequency conversion with sinusoidal output voltages and currents at the desired output frequency and allows bi-directional power flow.In this paper, the current control method for matrix converter is emphasized. Firstly, its mathematic mechanism, fundamental principle, circuit components and application are described briefly. Based on investigation and comparing with several voltage control methods, such as Venturini method, Instantaneous Double-Voltage Synthesis method and Space Vector Modulation method(SVM), referred to the achievement of current controlled voltage source converter, the idea of current control is introduced into MC. Several current control strategies are proposed. A basal hysteretic hand control method is applied to MC's output current control. In order to decrease the harmonics in MC's input and output current, the using zero vectors SVM method and sinusoidal hysteretic hand method are introduced into the MC hysteretic control respectively. Based on the predictive current control fundamental principle, reducing common-mode voltage strategies for current-controlled MC are proposed based on the hysteretic current control and space vector modulation is proposed. This paper simulates the introduced modulation strategies, establishes the MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation model and analyses the input and output performances under the introduced control technology, designs and simulates the input LC filter.Based on the simulation, an experiment equipment of matrix converter is constructed with the common emitter bidirectional switches. The modulation algorithm is implemented on the TMS320LF2407A DSP and the Semi Natural Two Steps commutation strategy is implemented on the CPLD. Result of experiments shows that the matrix converter on this scheme has rapid dynamic response, amplitude, frequency and waveform of its output current are coincide with the setting, and its current waveform is almost sinusoidal. The results of experiments certificate that the introduced modulation and commutation strategies are feasible.
