Ballast tank of a ship is the most easily attacked component to corrosive, because of its severe working environment and its complicated intrinsic structure. The ballast tank corrosion plays a central role in case of the ship safety problem. IMO initiated a safety assessment on various ship accidents, and after a 3-years investigation found that some grave ship accidents are caused by the problem of ballast tank corrosion. So the application of SOLAS regulation on corrosion prevention of dedicated seawater ballast tanks in all types of ships and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers and application of the performance standard for protective coatings for dedicated seawater ballast tanks in all types of ships and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers will enter into force on 1 August 2008. There is a large distance between our coatings quality and new standard required. Therefore, it's a important task that develop our own protective coatings for ballast tanks. In the present work, fluoro-carbon coating modified by Nano-TiO2 and epoxy coating with high solid volume were developed to take the general quality testing and corrosion prevention testing, and all the testing meet the new standard's request. By the testing, it's possible to analyze the quality of the coatings. At the same time, anti-corrosive properties of coatings in sea water were investigated by EIS.The experiment results indicated that the quality of the coatings developed is much better than the compared coatings, and meet the new coatings standard request. More important, the quality of coating can be advanced by Nano-TiO2.
