With the developing of economy, the importance of water resources is increasing in China .Lack of water resources in some area is becoming a serious problem. The main method of resolving the problem is water transfer project, in which the multi-stage pumping stations play an important role. At present, the pumping station system often has characteristics of poor efficiency and great energy consumption, so it has a large energy efficiency space in the system and it arrests lots of experts.A method of optimal operation pumping station by using the theory of system engineering and the Genetic Algorithms (GA) is put forward on the basis of the original investigation. GA is an optimal method to simulate the genetic and evolutional progress of the nature; it is superior to the dynamic programming in the aspect of solving nonlinear model with multiple constraints. The article makes a further analysis of the inner-plant economical operation of pumping station and establishes the optimal operation model which can increase economic benefits of pumping station. Simultaneity, in the analysis of the measured performance parameter of the same type of water pumps, the author finds the performance which has a great effect on the optimal result of the water pumps has changed a lot, so it need to re-fit the performance curve. According to the characteristic of the water transfer project, a method of optimal water level of multi-stage pumping station is presented. The decomposition-coordination model with the theory of the inner-plant economical operation of pumping station can simulate the performance of the system. The optimal operation model combined with the open-channel steady flow equation can calculate a set of optimal water levels among different pumping stations. The result has been proved to be satisfactory when the method is put into practice. The analysis of the results shows the validity and practicability of the two models constructed in the paper, and the applicability of the GA to the field of optimal operation of pumping station system. The optimal theory of the article provides a new way of solving the optimal operation problems.
