| With the development of China's economy, there has been an increase of privately-owned vehicles in recent years. The parking lot in the residential area has become one of the key factors to measure the quality of living environment in the residential area. When we witness an ever-increasing level of mechanization in the cities, if we do not reflect or consider the problem of parking in the residential area, this problem may pose an obstacle for the enforcement of the industrial policy of national vehicles, the transportation policy of urban roads as well as some other relevant policies. In addition, it would also lead to the worsening of the environment in the residential area. Consequently, we should fully recognize the importance of solving the parking problem in the residential area, and meanwhile try to find out effective countermeasures for parking system.The present paper first of all looks back on some elements that effect the development of China's family-owned vehicles as well as the reasons why the parking problem arose. Then based on a review of some planning theories and practices by western countries in face of similar problems, a summary is made of the revelations drawn upon the above-mentioned theories. Secondly, the paper is devoted to a field research on some residential areas in Tianjin as well as a collection and analysis of documents. It is hoped that through doing so, the main parking problems existing in the residential area in Tianjin may be found and their reasons may be explored to a certain extent. At the end of the paper, in combination of the factors influencing the need for parking lot in the residential area and a research on the way of organizing the traffic, separate countermeasures and suggestions are put forward to solve the parking problem in Tianjin residential areas.
