Since the 80~90s in the last century, with the development of Chinese economy, a great deal of High-class highways have been built. Along with the development of science and technology, more and more new technologies were applied to face road distress inspected. The hyerspectral remote sesing technology is one of them.Hyperspectral remote sensing plays an important role in the international remote sensing research. It was mostly used in the geology, ecology and vegetation study at present, not used in road distress yet. At first, the paper elaborated the present condition and trends of hyperspectral remote sensing, analysed the character and the possibility applying the techenology in road mapping. It also presented how to obtain the hyperspetral date and the pretreatment of the date. The progress of pretreatment includes image radiance calibration, reflectivity inversion, atmospheric and so on.They are the base of hyperspetral date processing.Secondly, the spectral character of typical construction can be used to identifying roads and distinguishing between principal construction materials (e.g.concrete vs asphalt). Both band selection and spectrum matching are important contexts in road mapping with hyperspectral date. The paper presented the theoretical models of them.Based on those, paper compared spectral characteristics of different road distress conditions. At last, this study used AVIRIS,HST image ratios and the spatial variance measures to relate the remote sensing signal to pavement condition indices. The conclusion considered that HST image are effective in identifying roads in good and very good condition. The variance and uncertainty in the data significantly increases for road surfaces in poor condition. So the further studies are needed to refine to analysis and develop a mapping strategy based on existing technology.
