Horizontal axis wind turbine and vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) were two basic forms of wind turbine. Traditional VAWT has not been largely applied due to start difficultly and low coefficient of performance. This paper tried to combine the variable pith technology with VAWT and initial development variable pith VAWT. This paper determined the overall parameters and system layout, designed wind turbine's impeller and present a pitch-way. In order to evaluate the performance of variable pith VAWT, this paper produced numerical procedures of wind energy utilization coefficient, established a VAWT performance simulation model. The results shown that the paper initially developed variable pitch VAWT had higher torque and coefficient of performance. This paper established the base for further development of new wind turbines with low-cost and high-efficiency.
