Based on previous studies and comprehensive investigation, and asking Huizhou handicraftsmen for advice with an open mind, this thesis researches into the structure, construction, technique and material of Huizhou vernacular dwellings with timber frame. The representative and universal Huizhou vernacular dwellings with timber frame in minitype are chosen as an object. Simplified sketches of the roofed structural members are worked out and the three dimensional FEM model is developed in this paper to calulate inner force, stress and displacement. Based on the results, the essay estimates the safety of the structure, discovers the key factors, positions and members which affect the structural characteristics and the reliability of structure and then analyzes the practical methods and efficient measures in building. The aim is to provide the theorectical base for protecting and utilizing vernacular dwellings and to facilitate the benign circulation of their protection and use.Most Huizhou vernacular dwellings with timber frame in minitype are column and tie construction. Beam or tiebeam is connected to column by mortise-tenon joint, it is semi-rigid joint. The results have shown that the stress of material of vernacular dwellings is less than the admissible stress of material in GB50005—2003 Code for design of timber structures. The structures are safe and has a high degree of safety. The safety of ridge columns is the most important in avoiding the destruction of the whole timber frames and vernacular dwellings. Generally speaking, the destruction of vernacular dwellings is not member damage but structural deterioration. The results also present that some possible damage places can be predicted. The Huizhou vernacular dwellings possess obvious regional characteristics. Measures such as designing plane placement, setting "guanjian" and sparrow brace, adopting cresent beam, enlarging section dimension and timber frames producing cohesion are taken to improve the reliability of structure.
