Since the 1990's, convex optimization technology research has been development vigorously with the modern interior point method successfully generalized to the linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). As one of the important convex optimization, semidefinite programming (SDP) especially has been the current research hot of the optimization field and widely used in the practice of control engineering.It is significant to improve and enhance the stability of the power system for the national economics. Maintaining the whole system stability has been the most important issue that the power system needs to consider. Practice has proved that synchronous generator excitation control is the preferred method for its economy and efficiency.On the basis of the study the system stability theory, this paper proposes a scheme for applying the optimization latest achievement to feedback control design, forms a design idea using SDP to process control problem. In order to achieve the whole system's stability, the scheme started from the state space equations which describe the system characteristics, the system's stability conditions were transformed into convex constraints by Lyapunov direct method, thus, control problem has been converted to convex optimization with LMIs constraints. It implies that the necessary and sufficient conditions of the linear time-invariant (LTI) system's Lyapunov stabilization are equivalent to the upper convex optimization problem has feasible solution. The interior point SDP is used to solve the convex optimization.Furthermore, the paper proposes the above control method apply to synchronous generator excitation control and chose the single machine infinite bus power system to simulate, the results of simulation show that the scheme can coordinate the dynamic and the static performances of the synchronous generator effectively, and make it have a good output performance.
