Cave dwelling is a characteristic residence form in loess area. It heritage of thousand years, and there still are too many of people live in it now. But loose cave dwelling have many self-defect, the appearance of disaster are multiple and the disrepair occur frequently, which threaten people's life and property safety seriously. These defects have been blocked the normal service and development of this residence form. In order to settle for these questions, this paper have made works as follows:The development of cave dwelling through history is summarized, then give an outline of historical synopsis and current situation and put forward some suggestions on its future development; Based on wide spot investigation, all kinds of diseases of loess cave dwelling are observed, and this paper analyzes the cause of formation; Moistening method which is closely related to major experiment has been studied through test comparison and give the reference data, uniformity is particularly focused; Comparing the methods of water content test and find that the microwave oven method is feasible and fast effective; Study how freeze-thaw circulation effect to loess strength under closed system conditions by lots of experiments, which including soil samples with different water content and different dry density are freezing and thawing at different freezing temperature and different circulations.The freeze-thaw circulation will decrease cohesion force and increase the internal friction angle. And the influence to cohesion force is greater; The effect of freeze-thaw to loess strength will be little as saturation become lower. The relationship between effect of freeze-thaw and saturation is significant; The lower freezing temperature will increase the effect of freeze-thaw to soil sample; The first freeze-thaw circulation change loess strength more obvious.; Soil samples with high dry density will be effect obviously by freeze-thaw circulation to its cohesion force. The internal friction angle of soil samples with different dry density will be the same along with the times of freeze-thaw circulation increase.
