In a modern power system, power cables are welcomed for its safety, reliability, durability and other advantages .But with the increase in running time, the various power cable fault highlighted .In the past, the off-line test can not find fault, repair or get a new cables in time, the entire power system is influenced by the fact, resulting in the use of electricity reliability and economy reduced. Therefore, the power cable online detection development is imperative.Paper analyse XLPE cable insulation failure ,recognize water branches is the main reason in running cable,cable insulation failure is mainly caused by the water branch,summed up the factor to form water trees ,and get the way to stop water tree.By comparing the various on-line detection method, summed up merits of the AC superposition method. Based on simulation and demonstration,based on the AC superposition method principle to extract 1 Hz characteristic signal, features a capacitance of the current sampling, through the analog signal conditioning circuit will feature 1 Hz signal from the mixer separated by AD converted for a single-processing machine, through the LCD display, measured 1 Hz signal and compare with the standard value to judge XLPE cable insulation states.
