With the scale-up of electric power system, the level of automation of the power increasingly high demands. Therefore, the high-powered IEDs have been widely applied in power system. At the same time, the sampling frequencies of current and voltage signals have improved. Real-time performance becomes very important to transfer the sampling values between the IEDs. Furthermore, the normal fieldbus is hard to meet this requires. Real-time Ethernet technology can improve the real-time performance of system. EtherCAT is the open real-time Ethernet. EtherCAT features include superiority real-time performance and topology flexibility, high precision synchronization, a cable redundancy option, and a functional safety protocol.In this thesis, EtherCAT communication specification and operating principle are deeply studied, and the methods of developing systems based on EtherCAT technology are proposed. Then, a data acquired system based on EtherCAT technology is designed and it is proved that the system can well satisfy the need of data acquisition in the power systems. EtherCAT technology can improve the real-time characteristics of data communication in power systems.
