With the rapid development of RCC dam technology and water conservation, some high RCC gravity dams are being designed and constructed in frequent earthquake territories of western china. It is very significant to study seismic behavior of RCC gravity dam. Therefore, in order to study and discuss dynamic response of RCC gravity dam, finite element dynamicial analysis method is used in this paper. These main contents of this paper are as follows:1,Dynamic response and finite element method basic theory and finite element dynamicial analysis method are introduced. Mode-superposition response spectrum method and time-history analysis method theories are studied and implemented. Using APDL, the author has developed the hydrodynamic pressure resolving module, and implemented the couple-resolving techniques of the interaction among dam body, foundation and water. These results gotten meet the realities of engineering.2,Based on above these theories, the effect of foundation range and elastic modulus on dynamic response are discussed and analysed. Foundation range and elastic modulus changed, the laws of effects on seismic displacements and stresses of overflow section of gravity dam from different foundation range and elastic modulus are researched.3,The practical project of Longtan RCC gravity dam is simulated. To study dynamic response in the earthquake of RCC gravity dam, mode analysis is applied to research and compare the dynamical characteristics of plane and 3-D finite element models of previous and disposable building plan. Changing laws of dam body on dynamic stress and displacement response are analysed by mode-superposition response spectrum method. Furthermore, dynamic response differences are compared.4,Based on standard , choosing artificial wave acceleration time history of Longtan frequent and rare earthquake and design response spectrum, and changing laws of dam body on dynamic stress and displacement response are analysed by time-history analysis method. At the same time, the gotten results are compared with mode-superposition response spectrum method. Some seismic cracking measures are given on the basis of researches and analysises.All of researches of this paper are combined with practical project and these results gotten are accorded with general laws. The research conclusions can provide some references to other designs, constructions and similar projects. Meanwhile, dynamic response of the high RCC gravity dam is very complex, and some problems and methods for further research in dynamic response will be developed.
