Cities have experienced the most impetuous phase of large-scale development and expanded into suburb areas from the beginning of 20th Century. In 1930s, the economy crisis erupted in America has badly destroyed the cities. After Roosevelt's New Deal have carried out for nearly twenties years, the Public Housing Project ended unsuccessfully. Then the Urban Renewal Project started and rescinded by the year of 1973, and followed by Housing and Urban Development Plan.This dissertation is focus on the issue of the failure of New York Urban Renewal Project from an urban planning perspective.Part I (Chapter I) introduces the subject, background and main thought of the dissertation. Part II (Chapter II&III) focus on the achievements and Inspiration Jane has got and given. Part III (Chapter IV&V) addresses on Jane's ideas of urban planning and introduce important awards and social activities for public's good that relate to Jane Jacobs.After summarizing the whole dissertation, the epilogue concludes with some recommendations on the urban planning theory and practice.
