Recently, the long-span steel structure system has been widely used in public building, such as large-scale gymnasium, exhibition center, hangar, and so on. In the design of real project, it's very significant to research that which kind of structure system not only can meet the challenge of architectural plane, space and span but also have good economic and technical norms. In this paper, the two types of design scheme is analyzed and contrasted for determine optimum scheme under ensure good mechanical performance. The destination goal of simplified design work and advanced operating efficiency can be reach.The paper introduced development, application, major calculation method, merits and faults, and scope of application of long-span steel structure system. For researching how to select optimum scheme based on economical performance, the paper put a Xi'an university gymnasium as example. First, two types of schemes is roughly selected. Then, the finite element software SAP2000 is used to set up single model and entire model of two schemes. At last, the final design project is determined by contrast two schemes' mechanical performance, steel use level, construction technology.The scene static test is carried out to proof the data which acquired from the finite element software SAP2000. The data would be used by scheme selection. Put every measuring point's displacement contrast to the data which acquired from the finite element software SAP2000. It can proof that the model is correct and scheme selection is reliable.
