All the countries in the world are suffering lots of casualties and economic loss resulting from traffic accidents every year. Neck injury is one of the most common traffic injuries and has arrested highly attentions from governments and researchers. In order to guide the development of the passenger restraint system, researchers have adopted various measures to investigate the injury mechanism of neck injury in the vehicle crash. At present, simulation is the most common and lowest cost method. The key of this method is how to develop a detailed FE neck model with good biofidelity rapidly.A great number of references and predecessors'achievements have been reviewed and summarized. At present, the common modeling methods are geometrical method and three-dimensional measuring method. However, the accuracy of the model built by the geometrical method is poor. The three dimensional measuring method is low efficiency, too costly and losing feature information easily. Therefore, a rapid method for human neck modeling based on CT method was proposed in this paper. This method can overcome those defects. At the same time, as the data was got from a living volunteer, good accuracy can be ensured. Mapped mesh method was used in this study. It can control the quality and number of the mesh to enhance the precision of result and reduce computational time largely. The model was also validated by various experimental data available. So, the limitation of single validation can be partly removedThe CT scan images of the vertebras of a Chinese healthy 50th percentile adult male volunteer were used to get the coordinate data of the cervical spine. Then, the cervix anatomic structure was studied and the CT images were dealed with by using MIMICS software. After that, a point cloud that can be used to reconstruct a cervical geometry model was extracted. The comparative analysis indicates that this geometry model has a detailed and exact anatomic structure, and this reconstruct method is also fast.HYPERMESH software was used to develop the cervix finite element model. The model includes vertebra, ligament, intervertebral disc, muscle and so on. The results of the cervical spine drop test, the front crash test and the rear crash test were used to do the validation. The results show that the model has good biofidelity and can be used in further study. The cervix model was coupled with the human body model developed by WAYNE STATE University. Then, the WAYNE model had an obvious improvement in cervix. Many defects, such as the neck model was too simple, the dynamic response of the neck was not exact during crash, and the output data were not enough, were overcomed. At last, this model was adopted to analyze the response of the neck in the front crash. The results show that this model can exactly describe the response of the head and neck during crash and enough result data can be get to do the study of the neck injury mechanism.
