With the development of big cities and increasing traffic demand, more and more expressways are built to relieve the congestion. Urban expressways are linked tightly with surface roads through ramps, and traffic flows on the ramps is characterized by disorder, complexity and management difficulty, so traffic management in transition area of expressway is very meaningful to the improvement of expressway capacity and the enhancement of traffic safety. Most transportation software in China are developed by other countries, therefore some disciplines are obscure to us and are not suitable for China. The paper uses CA (Cellular Automata) model to simulate traffic conditions on urban expressways. Then the paper suggests some improvement measurements and analyzes the effect of these measures on the efficiency of expressways.Based on the characteristics of drivers, the paper uses CA model to simulate through, merging, diverging behaviors in expressway transition area. Then we analyze the influence of different pavement markings on the condition of traffic flow, which provides theory for transportation engineering practice..The paper also validates the CA model by macroscopic traffic flow theory and gap acceptance theory.
