Freeway is an important part of road network and provides high efficient service with high capacity and high speed. In recent years, with the increasing traffic demand, heavy traffic demand often lead to traffic crowd congestion and traffic accident on the urban expressway. The traffic congestion becomes a serious problem in modern transportation systems. Traffic control is used to guarantee safety and to get the freeway at a desired performance. The systems with multiple parallel plants(MPP system) exist in a wide variety of engineering fields, such as chemical engineering, power systems, transportation systems, and computer engineering, etc. The thesis mainly studies the traffic balancing control problem of freeway and auxiliary traffic. The main problem studied and the results obtained in this dissertation can be summed up as follows. First, the task balancing control method with multiple parallel plants is applied to the balancing control problem between the freeway mainline and the Auxiliary via the on-ramp and off-ramp metering strategies. Then extensive simulation results using Matlab software are given out to demonstrate the efficacy and the correctness of the proposed approach.
