This thesis studies on excitation system of water turbine generator unit and finds out a set of excitation system which can be used in good-sized and medium-sized water turbine generators. In combination with the real machine test in LongShou secondary hydropower plant 4# water turbine generator, and through analyzing the test date, it can be concluded that it is of important significance for hydropower plant generator excitation practice based on this method.To begin with, this paper sums up the important effects which synchronous generator excitation system plays in electric power system run, and introduces the history and development trend of generator excitation system, both domestic and foreign , then analyses the components and important function of excitation system in detail.Secondly, on the basisi of summarizing arithmetic history and application situation of geneator exciation system control method, this paper introduces conventional PID control, improved PID control, power system stabilization, PID+PSS control, and fuzzy PID control, linear optimal control, nonlinear optimal control and respective merit and demerit which are now hotly studied.Thirdly, according to the analysis above and hydropower plant 4# generator unit idiographic condition, this thesis develops a set of excitation system for the generator. This system possesses of several merits such as unique double buses, microcomputer/ microcomputer/ simulate regulate channels, favorable software compatibility man-machine interface, connect neatly. Also, it introduces hardware design, peripheral interface, communication rules, software design, work principle of this excitation system.Finally, through generator current rise experiment, generator voltage rise experiment, excitation system closed and opened loop experiment done on the 4# generator, analyses experimental date and characteristic curve. The result turns out a favorable performance of the excitation system.
