In China, number of existing bridges and planned bridges are tremendous, and number of dangerous bridges also grows year by year. How to effectively taking care of these bridges becomes the focus of road maintenance and maintenance agency. Currently, China is in infrastructure development phase, most of the investments are putting into new infrastructure development, whereas the investment on maintenance of infrastructure is limited. How to make full use of such limited capital so as to improve to the most extend the safety and capability of bridge structure is another challenge in front of bridge managers. Structural deterioration forecast, as a component of a bridge management system, plays a vital role on determining the feasible application of maintenance investment. A feasible bridge deterioration model can help bridge management staffs to make more rational decision, and can greatly improve the utility efficiency of maintenance investment. Objective of this dissertation is to establish the theoretic foundation for bridge deterioration model. Specifically, studies are focused on following aspects:(1) Several domestic and oversea bridge management systems are introduced, specifically, the deterioration model used in PONTIS system are paid much attention on.(2) By means of comparison and analysis, a set of bridge evaluation plan has been established which adapts to the deterioration model put forward in this dissertation.(3) Markov theory is used to set up bridge deterioration model, which is further optimized with appropriate numerical tools.(4) From aspect of material deterioration, the causes of bridge deterioration are analyzed, and an assistant model is also built which plays the role of supplementary function.
