The scale of electric power system in china become larger and larger, and HV/UHV transmission lines have been developed quickly, which leads to higher requests for fault location sets for HV/UHV transmission lines. With the progresses of computer, communication and correlative technique, It is of great necessity to develop more advanced microprocessor based fault location set for HV transmission line. This paper just focuses on this task.At first this paper introduced the history of fault location and the new directions on microprocessor based fault location, summarized the techniques of fault location respectively. Then this paper researched and analyzed the process of a perfect fault location device for UHV transmission line. In this system the fault location of traveling-waves and the fault location of stable state quantity are combined in order to exert the trait and predominance of each methods and enhance overall performance of the fault location system. The total design scheme, the basic hardware structure and the fundamental principle of the fault location method are presented.In the fault location system, the paper focus on the fault location of stable state quantity. For the different needs, the fault location of stable quantity includes fault location algorithms for high voltage transmission line using one terminal voltage and current and the algorithms of using this intersection to realize the fault location based on double terminal electrical quantities.A deep-going research on the commonly adopted fault location algorithms for high voltage transmission line using one terminal voltage and current is performed in this paper. The inner relationship of them is also analysed in detail, the correctness of this algorithm is proved by the result of simulation calculation and calculation based on a group of real testing data, includes different fault types, different transition resistances and different line length.The algorithms of the fault location based on double terminal electrical quantities is introduced. This paper analyse the effect of the different mutual inductance device error, the different stable quantity error, the different line parameter error. The result indicates the precision of this algorithm is effect by these errors. Aim at this instance, the paper puts forward fault location of stable state quantity adopts an algorithm based on sequence voltage ratio.At last, the paper combines he fault location of traveling-waves and the fault location of stable state quantity, designs algorithms for high voltage transmission line stable fault location of the software. This paper introduces the software modules includes the fault starting time, the fault elect phase, single port algorithm and double port algorithm of design and its realization, introduced the functions.
