Water mist fire suppression system has the advantages of less water consumption, environmental friendliness and high efficiency. With the increase of the sense of environmental protection and more and more attention has been paid to fire accidents, water mist fire suppression technology achieves a lot of developments in the recent decades, and must be one of the most important technology of fire suppression in the future.As one of the most disastrous accidents at sea, fire on board is usually more difficult to be put out because of the special condition of the ship and the harsh environment of the sea. ft may cause damage to property and endanger life on board, or even pollute the environment of the sea. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out the research of new and efficient water mist fire suppression system.In this thesis, with portable high pressure water mist fire suppression system on board as the research object, method of principle analysis, simulation and doing experiments have been utilized. A novel high pressure water mist nozzle has been developed, and a portable high pressure water mist fire suppression system has been designed and built up. In this thesis, the current status and characteristics of fire on board and the traditional marine fire suppression system have been introduced. The current status of studies on water mist fire suppression technology has been generalized. A brief introduction of water mist fire suppression system and technology and a comparison between traditional fire suppression technology and water mist has been done. The mechanisms of the formation of water mist, atomization and fire suppression have been analyzed in details. Theory of jet flow, standards of water mist quality evaluation and principles of nozzle design have been studied. A novel nozzle based on the principle of jet and turbulent flow has been designed and CFD simulation of its flow passage has been done. Experiments on its effectiveness over pool fire have been done. The results of simulations and experiments showed that wider atomization angle and stronger momentum of the droplets can be achieved with this new kind of nozzle. And the system is very effective on pool fire.
