| With the increase of the train speed, the vertical and transverse interaction between wheel and rail would result in excessive vibration of vehicle systems. Hydraulic damper is effective energy dissipation device. So, it is widely used in the rolling stock. Hydraulic damper have been becoming an important part in the rolling stock for improving the comfort and assuring the safety of railway transportation.The operating principle of hydraulic damper is to absorb vibrational energy using the negative work done by liquid viscosity resistance. It is an advantage that the flow resistance is the function of vibration speed. By establishing the physical model of damping adjustment system and the multi-stage-fitted dynamic modeling equations of hydraulic damper, the processes of the linear and bilateral decreasing vibration processes is simulated and analyzed. The static and dynamic damping characteristics (the relations between damping force and displacement, speed and time) of hydraulic damper are ensured by means of the damping characteristics models. The resistance properties about the uniflow and bidirectional flowing hydraulic damper is calculated and analyzed based on different flow direction of hydraulic oil.The homebred hydraulic damper is difficult to satisfy the operational requirements due to leakage oil and insecure performances. A lot of imported hydraulic dampers (Koni, Dispen, Sachs, etc) have been adopted in the speed-increased rolling stocks for the satisfaction with the requirement of speed-up railway. The structural characteristics and performances of two kinds of hydraulic damper have been introduced and compared in detail. The malfunction and cause of hydraulic damper have been summarized in the process of application.The inspection and repair of hydraulic damper is an important link in the process of application. So, it should be aroused enough attentions. The self-features of application and inspection and repair of hydraulic damper of railway decide the importance of inspection and repair works.
