Since Reform and Opening-up,the economy of China has been in a state of rapid development. As a historical and cultural city, Beijing currently lists much ancient architecture, and does not integrate the protection of modern architecture into the system. Aiming at the realistic problems of contemporary architecture in Beijing, this paper initiates to the consideration of the modern architectural development process.On the basic of a great deal of investigation of existing conditions about Beijing modern architecture, it has systematically reviewed the western culture of different periods that made a great influence on Beijing modern architecture. Furthermore, the paper discusses the interwoven process of the western culture, as well as these specifical manifests in Beijing.The Western Culture here mainly means the architectural trends from western countries chiefly in Europe and the United States and the USSR, which have a great influence on the formation of modern architectural system of China from the middle of the 19th Century to 1978, the year of Reform and Opening-up.This paper focuses on"development"of Beijing modern architectures and is divided into 2 parts.Part 1 (2nd chapter):In this part, the author firstly analyzes Chinese culture and the Western Culture at that time in order to give a panoramic view of them. And then, it presents background of Beijing modern architecture and emphasizes conception of the two cultures"Dynamic"in the course of development.Part 2 (3rd, 4th chapter):In chapter 3, the paper summarizes the architectural charactertics of Beijing modern architecture under the influence of the western culture, which mainly discusses the superficial factors such as architectural styles and construction technologies on one hand, and highlights the designer of this process, namely the roles of architects on the other hand. In chapter 4, it focuses on overall analysis of representive features for Beijing modern architecture in responding the influence of western culture, such as time lag, eclectic tendency. Furthermore, the feature with strong impressions on politics and culture is particular to Beijing modern architecture.The research of the paper aims at complete analysis of Beijing modern architectures under the influence of the western culture. At the same time, it draws the key conclusions that Beijing modern architecture, as a part of the urban development, is not only to stay in the framework of historic protection, instead, also to make the modern architecture melt into the more abundant urban form, and to form a whole, not dissevered, city chain.
