In this paper, the heat generating principle and steady temperature field are researched taking the temperature field of a 300km/h asynchronous traction motor as researched object. The practical operation of asynchronous traction motor is a very complex physical process. To describe this physical process exactly it is necessary to exactly calculate the value of every heat source and the thermal parameter of every component of the motor. Because insulation layers in strands and turns are very thin, they are always be out of consideration when calculating the fields of asynchronous traction motor. But the whole areas of stator strands insulation may exceed that of one piece of strand and it will have certain of effect on the calculation precision. The same effect occurs for the turn insulation. Also the insulation layers are always ignored in the calculation and analyze of temperature field. However even a thin insulation layer may have a significant temperature drop and this will have a direct effect on the machine design. The value of the loss, the equivalent of heat conductivity for stator coil and the thermal convection coefficient of convection faces are researched in this paper. The insulation layers are very thin, and the stator strands insulation distributes thickly in the slot. That make the mashing more complex. In order to simplify the calculation process on the basis of acceptable calculation precision, this paper treats with the insulation by using equivalent method. The calculation of the air cooling system is very complex due to the complexity of the motor configuration. This paper analyzes the network of the air cooling system using network matrix method, then gives the air cooling network matrix of a large-scale motor. This paper has calculated the temperature of an asynchronous traction motor with axial vents on the basis of finite element method, has analyzed the thermal characteristic of some special points in the motor, the hottest position of the motor has been indicated. The main factors that have effect on the temperature field have been discussed. The temperature field of a 300km/h traction motor has been calculated on 2D and 3D plane. Then a contrast has been taken between the calculation result and the test result in order to validate the veracity of the calculation.
