The wavy plate heat exchanger is a new type heat transfer device. It has been applied inso many industrial sectors. The existing research were mainly concentrated on heat transferand flow characteristics, but little mechanics behavior such as strength and stress wereinvestigated in the process of manufacturing and running. With ANSYS software and finiteelement method, a model of wavy plate is presented in this paper. The element selection,gridding, the finite element model of spot weld, loading and resolution are also discussed andthe APDL program is wrote. Through the calculation of ANSYS, the stress distribution ofwavy plate in the process of manufacturing and running was obtained. It fills up the bank inthe fields of stress analysis, and provides reference to the process of manufacturing andrunning.It is the first time to introduce node-node model to simulate the spot weld connectionwith MPC184 element. The spot weld radius is taken into account in this simulation methodand avoids fine local mesh comparing with the conventional algorithm. Automatic projectionis used in the construction of spot weld and the position of spot weld can be decided inanywhere. Seal weld is similar to spot weld, so it can be simulated by the connection of somespot welds.In this paper, two different structure of wavy plate are analyzed in detail: wavy platewithout seal weld and wavy plate with seal weld.The result of simulation indicated that the deformed shape obtained by simulation wassimilar to the figure of manufacturing. The distributions of stresses along some certainmapped paths were examined. Equivalent stress nearby the spot weld is greater other placeand there is obvious stress concentration. The strength of the wavy plate is reinforced by theseal weld. The reliability of spot welds of the wavy plate is investigated by brittle failurecriterion and it coincides satisfactorily with experimental result.By use of electrical test method, the stress on the surface of wavy plate under variouspressures was measured. The accuracies of the numerical simulation results have beenverified by comparing with the stresses measure results. It indicates that the simulationmethod for spot welds of the complicated surface is efficient.
