The drilling dynamometer is a basic device of monitoring the data of the drilling process and plays an important role in many aspects such as automatous machining, self-adapting and optimum control. In recent years, with the discovery and applications of the torsional effect of quartz disc, the facture of the drilling dynamometer has been simplified greatly. And the fact of surveying forces of different directions by using one single sensor also becomes possible.This project is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (No.50475152). From the application aspect of engineering, based on interdisciplinary knowledge, such as Physics of Crystals, Physics of Dielectrics, Theory of Elasticity of an Anisotropic Body, Electromagnetics, Piezoelectricity, the torsional effect of quartz disc is discussed in the project and the simulation of torsional effect of rotund quartz disc is made by the FEA software ANSYS. According to the specialty and applied demand of the dynamometer, the main parameters of the four-component dynamometer, such as the size of the quartz disc and the body of the dynamometer, the preload and measuring range are designed and the structure of the dynamometer is analyzed by FEA software ANSYS and a four-component piezoelectric drilling dynamometer is designed and manufactured whose measuring range is Fz =0~1500N, Fx/Fy=0~1000N,M=0~9N. m. By the static calibration, the dynamic calibration and cutting experiments, it is proved that the performance of the four-component drilling dynamometer has fully reached the dynamic dynamometer standard stipulated by CIRP-STCC and provided reference and direction for the design and manufacture and research of drilling dynamometer. The outstanding feature of the four-component piezoelectric dynamometer in contrary to other types of drilling dynamometers is as follows: it adopts torsion effect of square quartz with a circular hole inside. Only four slices of Y0°-cut quartz are used in a torque and a radial force measuring. The structure is simple and convenient for checkout. The technical performances of machining and assembling are good, and its production cost is low. The dynamometer can measure four components forces at the same time; therefore, the distributing situation about cutting forces in drilling process is described more completely. So it is used not only in the laboratory but also in testing ofpractical and real-time control. Based on the content cited above, the author makes a research on whether the dynamometer can make no-centering measuring and provides a method of data processing and develops data processing program with Visual Basic Language.
