The static and wind induced vibration analysis of natural draught cooling tower is studied. First, the commercial finite element analysis software ANSYS is used to calculate the stresses of natural draught cooling tower at the power plant under wind, gravity and temperature loads. The stresses of the supporting columns and the ring beam under the ring beam being modeled by element beam188 are compared with those under the ring beam being modeled by element shell63. Second, with the height of the cooling tower exceeding the limit of code, the gust effect factors have to be studied carefully. The results of the wind tunnel testing based on both the rigid model and the elastic model of the cooling tower is introduced briefly. The gust effect factors are calculated based on the experimental results of the rigid model under turbulence single tower, turbulence two towers, and under typhoon two towers. And the calculated results compared with those from the elastic model test. The calculated results have been applied to the design of the natural draught cooling tower.
