The excitation control of synchronous generators is one of basic means that ensures the stable operation of power system and improves the dynamic character of power system. Performance and reliability of excitation control directly decides and influences the effect of synchronous generators in the power system. Reliability is particularly important factor to weigh the quality of excitation system. This article will make the research work in this aspect.At present, there are many excitation control methods in synchronous generator, such as the PID excitation control method, the non-linear excitation control method and the Variable Structure Control method. But the literature on how to apply the impulsive control theory in the synchronous machine excitation is actually few.When a system formulated by an ordinary differential equation comes under an impulsive disturbance, the system will take on some phenomena such as instantaneous change. Impulsive differential models provide many useful tools available for these phenomena. This article elaborates impulsive control method, shows the stable definition and standard of impulse system. Embarks from the impulse system path, portrays the unique characteristic of impulse control system different from continual control system and discrete control system. Elaborate the main conclusion of impulse system comparison principle.When Power system is moving always exist this kind of pulse instantaneous, but the synchronous generator is the main composition part of power system. Therefore this article takes single-machine infinity as the research object, establishes its'mathematical model, designs the impulsive excitation controller according to the pulse control theory thought, and shows the design method and design step.Finally, the simulation model of the single-machine infinity system is built in the MATLAB/Sim Power System toolbox. Three kinds excitations mentioned in this paper (AVR excitation controller, AVR+PSS excitation controller and impulsive excitation controller) has made the simulation analysis. The simulation result indicates although the AVR+PSS excitation control system can obtain a very good control effect. But the impulsive excitation control system surpasses the AVR+PSS excitation control system in several major targets which can represent the control performance quality. The impulsive controller is an excitation control device which is worth promoting.
