In insulation design and analysis of high voltage electrical appliance, the numerical computation plays very important role. Presently, the analysis of insulation performance has been performed based on the numerical solving techniques. Generally, numerical computation method of electric field includes boundary division method and domain division method .In which, the domain division method covers finite difference method (FDM) and finite element method (FEM) .And the boundary division method includes charge simulation method (CSM) and surface charge method (SCM) .Due to some application advantages of CSM, it has been widely employed for computing the electric field of electrical appliance.In the application of traditional CSM, there exist some artificial factors during the preprocessing course. Aiming at this problem, an improved CSM is proposed based on the theoretical study of traditional CSM. Consequently, the matching relationship of contour point and simulation charge has been established, more higher computing precision can be obtained using less simulation charge.Based on the natural selection and principle of genetic algorithm (GA), the mechanism of GA has been applied in the improved CSM. In the concrete application, the contour point and testing points has been allocated according to the traditional CSM, and the position of the simulation points can be generated using the improved GA. By the application of some demonstration examples, it can be seen that, the calculation error of the testing point can be reduced by 90%, the precision requirement of the engineering computation can be satisfied, and the efficiency can be increased.For verifying the feasibility and validity of the improved CSM, the calculation of electric field of spherical plane electrode has been performed. Moreover, the vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) has been taken into consideration, and the electric field of VCB has been computed and analyzed. Furthermore. the theoretical basis of computation of electric field and analysis of insulation performance of the open boundary electric field has been established.
