Tail transmission shaft is an important component in helicopter transmission system, its function is to transmit power to tail gearbox by connecting tail output of main gearbox with middle and tail gearbox inputs. No complete design method on helicopter tail transmission shafting exists up to now in China. Further more, the domestic made helicopter tail transmission shafting reveals quite a few problems during operating. The purpose of this project is to define a design method on tail transmission shafting, which will facilitate the troubleshooting on existing types of tail transmission shafting on one hand, and will establish the basis for the self-design of tail transmission shafting on the other hand.Tail transmission shafting design consists of many aspects such as general structure, static strength, fatigue strength, dynamic performances etc. This paper, through referencing the typical structure of existing types of tail transmission shafting, describes the general layout of tail transmission shafting, material selection of main components, and coupling methods etc.; determines the static strength by using conventional calculation method, defines the fatigue strength by using safety life evaluation method of 1980's of Aerospacial France; reduces the vibration during operation by using critical speed to avoid the operation speed and dynamic balancing method; determines the bullet resistance capability by using finite element analysis; and defines the reasonable strength and rigidity of flexible coupling which could compensate the coaxiality of tail transmission shaft by using a simple mockup.The determination of helicopter tail transmission shaft design method, sets a record in the creating the tail transmission shafting design method in China, which not only provides the basis for self-design of tail transmission shafting and reduces development time, but also plays an important role in solving the problems occurred on the existing types of tail transmission shafting.
