Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL), with the excellent characteristics, is widely applied in the field of fiber sensor and photoelectric communication. Especially in the field of navigation-grade fiber optical gyroscope (FOG), it is treated as the most attractive candidate and its performance directly affect the precision and stability of the gyro. Therefore, it is very important to conduct research on erbium-doped fiber source for improving the performance of fiber optical gyroscope.The paper study on the characteristics of erbium-doped fiber laser, that is exclusively used in fiber optical gyroscope. Firstly, the mechanism of fiber optical gyroscope is introduced. Then, we analyze three kinds of sources that are used in fiber optical gyroscope and analyze how these factors, such as output power,mean wavelength stability and spectrum width, affect performance of fiber optical gyroscope. The conclusions will be helpful. Secondly, we analyze the physical structure of Erbium ionic, then compare every useable pump and choose the best one. Moreover, we design and realize the pump driver circuit, which includes constant current circuit,ATC,APC and also protect circuit. Thirdly, the emission theory of EDFL is proposed, a physical model based on classical rate propagation equation is build and described with mathematics method. Besides, different structures of EDFL and gain flatten methods are introduced and compared. According to these characteristics, we design a optical structure for EDFL. Finally, the factors, take length of erbium doped fiber,pump power for instance, and its influence to FOG are discussed, we fabricate a high output,high stability EDFL by setup optimization factors.In conclusion, the paper is intent to solve an interesting problem of FOG and conduct research on EDFL with high output and high stability. The theoretical and experimental results are very useful to the development of fiber optical gyroscope.
