Gear drive is the most fundamental in mechanical drives. Face gear drive has many unique advantages as a new type gear drive, especially in high-power and high-speed applications. This paper studies the generation of tooth profile, the characteristics of geometry and lubrication. The equation of tooth profile of orthogonal-shaft face gear is derived. For the line contacting and located contacting in face gear drives, the meshing equations are obtained, and the visualization of contact lines and contact points on tooth surface is realized. The speed on tooth surface and curvatures of tooth profiles are formulated, computed by the program developed. The typical formulas of film thickness are introduced, and the minimum film thickness located contacting face gear is calculated. The theory of elasto-hydrodynamics lubrication is introduced. The stress and size for line contact and located contact are computed. Through the direct iterative process, the numerical solution was obtained including the film thickness and pressure distribution over the contact area. The influence of main parameters such as speed, material, and load on film thickness and pressure distribution is analyzed.
