The formation flying of satellites is a technology which can make several satellites work together to form a "huge dummy satellite". With the large aperture and the long baseline, it performs the same functions as a single big spacecraft. Moreover, it can not only bring down the cost and risk obviously, but also eliminate the impact of the satellite malfunction on the space mission. The formation flying of satellites has been recognized as one of next generation available technologies by NASA. It will play an important role in many fields such as the electronic reconnaissance, three-dimensional imaging, satellite remote sensing, navigation etc. Although the formation flying has many advantages, it still has lots of technological problems to be solved. Researching work about the formation design and HLA distributed simulation of formation flying has been done in this thesis.Firstly, several dynamical describe methods for formation flying of satellite, such as the numerical integral method, the C-W equations method, the Lawden's equations method, the orbit elements difference method, the relative orbit elements method and reference orbit elements method, are mainly discussed. It is also analyzed the working condition for each dynamical describe method.Secondly, the configuration design process, which includes task analysis, configuration selection, configuration initializing, and stability analysis, is discussed. Based on the C-W equations method, the configuration initial condition is given for every typical formation, and the formation stability with the configuration initial condition is also analyzed. By adding the nonlinear quadratic terms to the model and taking the effect of J2 perturbation into account, the stability of formation flying is improved obviously.Finally, it is introduced the characteristics of the HLA distributed simulation. It is also given the HLA simulation frame for the formation flying, the federal design and mathematical models. At the same time, the microwave imaging formation and circular formation of three satellites are simulated and analyzed.
