Automobile industry accelerates the course of society modernization, at the same time it brings problems of environment pollution and magnitude energy source depleting, so many countries research electric vehicle to solve actuality. Traction motor is one of the key parts of drive system of electric vehicle, Permanent Magnet (PM) motor is an ideal traction motor because of high factor, high efficiency, high power density. PM motor is now gradually instead of induction motor becoming the main type. This paper bases on the study of Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) PM traction motor, four parts are included as follows:First of all, putting forward the main contents of this paper basing on analyzing the actuality of EV traction motor.Second, it is studied that the parameters of PM motor affecting on field-weakening combine with control strategy of inverter. The max torque/current control is applied in the constant torque area, the factors, d-axis, q-axis inductance and magnet flux linkage, of affecting turn-speed (the max speed in the constant torque area )of PM traction motor are analyzed quantificationally basing on formula of turn-speed. The field-weakening control is applied in the constant power area, the effect is analyzed that d-axis inductance and magnet flux linkage for the max-speed in the constant power area, and provided the relation curve.Third, the PM traction motor of high density and high performance is difficult to design. The key problems of PM traction motor design are advanced according to the run characteristic and performance of PM traction motor. Configuration parameters are designed optimally, the select methods of some parameters of PM traction motor are presented, and different kinds of water-cooling structure applied in traction motor are provided.Finally, a PM traction motor used in HEV is designed, rated torque is 291.5N·m, rated power is 55kW. Standard drawings of prototype are drew, and prototype is produced.
