ABSTRACT: The development of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) has been one of the most important areas in the field of transportation. Floating vehicle technology has been widely applied for traffic data collection in ITS. Many important functions in ATIS and ATMS all need the results of travel time estimation. Therefore, improving precision of travel time estimation and reduce its economic cost, are very important to ensure the great operation of ATIS and ATMS.First of all, paper introduces the frame and key technologies of floating car system based on GPS/GIS, basic concept and theory of travel time estimation. Then the characteristics of existing travel time estimation algorithms currently widely used are listed and compared.Then, concerning the large data and the requirement of real-time in floating car system , the author investigates the dedicated travel time estimation algorithms based basic concept and theory of MM (Map-Matching) and FC technology. This paper introduces the method which the estimative travel time is including run-time and waiting-time, and solves the travel time problem of the little number of FC and the heavy traffic float, using GPS position information , location of waiting-points and the data of front cars. The model estimates the run-time and the waiting-time separately, also fixes them based real circumstances. The estimative travel time is summation of them. The way model used reduces the counting capacity of estimation process. It is very simple when the history database set up and makes the less expense of system.At last, the author also makes the analysis and evaluation about the performance of key algorithms used which is conducted with urban network in Beijing. Then two suggestions are posed for future research.
