The main problem of the traveling wave protection is the bad reliability. Facing many disturbances on transmission line, how to differentiate and reject the unwanted signal is still one difficult problem. This paper analysis the reflection and the transmission characteristic of the line, and proposes one unique thought, divides the line span into four sections, the fault occurs in each section of lines is corresponding with one kind of pattern, and defines one subordination function according to the fuzzy theory, which is used for the pattern recognition. The theory analysis and the simulation prove that this algorithm can effectively distinguish the disturbance pulse, has very good accuracy and robustness. Because of the high non-linear characteristic of MOV parallelly installed with capacitor, the conventional algorithm for fault location is not suitable for series compensated lines. This paper put emphasis on influence of series capacitor compensation for the traveling wave fault location of HV transmission lines, and presents a new traveling wave algorithm for series compensated lines based on mathematical morphology. The presented algorithm has been extensively tested using the ATP modal of a transmission line. The simulation results showed that this algorithm not only has high accuracy but also robustness.
