Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, one of the driest areas in China, lies in the northwest frontier, which belongs to Eurasian hinterland. Kuitun City, with industrial water and living water based on the groundwater, is the center of economic zone in the north slope of Tianshan Mountain. This paper aims to study the quality and pollution of groundwater, and then predict its development trend. On this basis, groundwater pollution will be optimally controlled, which will contribute to the sustainable development of Kuitun's economy.According to investigations and researches on the actual situation of the groundwater in Kuitun City, the results are as follows:Firstly, the investigation and assessment on the groundwater pollution focus on industrial, living and agricultural sources. The finding indicates that industrial pollution sources are solid waste and industrial waste drainage, whose main pollutants include BOD5 and CODCr While the main agricultural pollution sources are chemical fertilizer, pesticide and mulching film, with the amount increasing year by year. The living pollution sources are domestic garbage and sewage. As to sewage, it consists of BOD5 and CODCr.Secondly, this paper evaluates present environmental situations of the groundwater sources in Kuitun City. The result shows that the sulfate item exceeds quota, whose main pollutant is sulfate. The groundwater quality is relatively bad. As regards to the surface water quality, the standard result is III.The results also indicate that the annual level of the three items tends to rise, including total hardness, SO42- and NO3-N which are the main factors of pollution in First Water Works. According to ammonia nitrogen findings, the changing tendency shows that the Kuitun River water quality is relatively stable.Thirdly, according to the monitoring data of the groundwater in Kuitun City, it analyzes the annual averages of the three items, including total hardness, SO42- and NO3-N. Furthermore, it forecasts the total hardness, SO42- and NO3-N in the coming five years.Fourthly, it analyzes the causes of the total hardness, SO42- and NO3-N, and to target these causes, it also introduces several ways and measures to prevent and control groundwater pollution.
