Cascading failure of power system is the chain-reaction such that a series of components in the system stop working due to the breakdown of some single component. It does not occur very often, but the hazardness is rather terrible. The serious cascading failure can cause the split of the entire electric power grid and the blackout in a big region, which results in the enormous economic losses to the society. Along with the progress on the power system, the development of the electric power network, the power grid often work near their limit; therefore the research on Cascading failures of power system is extremely necessary. In this paper, I first summarize the mechanism and characters of cascading failure based on the related factors which could cause cascading failure, and followed by a brief introduction to the methods to analysis the cascading failure. I then proceed with the introductions and comments on the existing models on cascading failure from the aspect of artificial power system, complex network and generalized network.After that,from the aspect of the reliability of power system,I narrate and comment several indices to evaluate the reliability of the power system, and their advantages and disadvantages are compared. The applications of these indices on the power system are also mentioned. Then according to the need to the investigation on accidents of power system cascading failure, in order to quickly seek the potential hazard and propose the rescue plan, I emphasis on the introduction to the methods to reconnaissance cascading failure for three kind of modes. Finally, the simulation analysis on IEEE 9-bus system about the cascading failure is done by the TH-2100 dispatching automatic system, from which the reliable conclusions are obtained, which confirms the advantage and validity of the investigation.In the experiment, it shows if a line or a component is broken-down, the tide numerical value of nearby line or component will change on IEEE 9-bus system; if the line or component is working well-balanced and it can not deal with the change of tide, it will bring new tide distribution, it induces that the system is in cascading failure at last.
