The Structural Health Monitoring System of a large span bridge is an online system for monitoring structural health condition and performance during its service life. It is the use of in - situ, nondestructive sensing and analysis of structural characteristics, including the structural response, for the purpose of identifying if damage has occurred, determining the location of damage, estimating the severity of damage and evaluating the consequences of damage on the structure.This thesis introduced the advanced Structural Health Monitoring System of the large span bridge currently, Runyang Yangtse Bridge (RYB) in China. The main components and their function of the Structural Health Monitoring System on RYB were presented in details. The main sensors installed in RYB include two categories, the first are sensors for load monitoring including anemometers, temperature sensors and weigh-in-motion sensors; the second are those for response monitoring which include accelerometers, strain gauges, displacement transducers and GPS. The choice of sensors and their optimization arrangement were demonstrated. The results of this study shows that the Structural Health Monitoring System on RYB integrates the modern technology of sensors, computer network, digital signal processing, data analysis and evaluation and structural analysis method, which extends the field of bridge monitoring and improve the reliability of evaluation.Based on the study on the structural health monitoring system on RYB, the author analyzed further the data of loading and response output from the system after one year performance, in which the dynamic properties of the bridge structure were paid attention for the understanding of the global response of the bridge.Research and development needs on the bridge structural health monitoring system are addressed. The research and application of the Structural Health Monitoring System as a research topic is very important. It should be aimed at different types of large span bridges and to install bridge structural health monitoring system, and the health condition of the bridge can be evaluated on the basis of the data from the system and evaluation method of bridge health condition. The results from the system and the analysis are significant for the maintenance of the bridge to insure the safety and endurance of the bridge.
