All machinery motions rely on relative movement of contact pairs. The relative movement would result in the appearance of wear. Furthermore, wear would result in surface damage, failure and the loss of material. On the other hand, the processes of wear bring on the loss of power and the waste of energy. An important measure of reducing wear is lubrication. In general, the old lubrication oils only reduce the wear of the relative movement surfaces and prolong their life. However, the lubrication oil could not produce self-repairing film on the friction surface. So, there are not zero wear and self-repairing effects under traditional lubrication conditions.With the development of science and technology, the requirements to lubricating oil and its additives are increasing year by year, and the performance of the oils are been improving gradually. The traditional oil-soluble anti-wear and friction-reducing additives could increase load-carrying abilities and extreme-pressure properties, but they would produce the environmental pollution. The applications of ordinary inorganic particles are restricted due to the poor dispersing ability. Nowadays, the application of nano-materials provides a new approach for the lubricating additives.The wear tests of different normal load, frequency and the content of the additives have been performed under ball-on-flat contact using a reciprocating apparatus under the nano-particle additive lubrication conditions. The tribological characteristic and self-repairing mechanism of the nano-particle additive lubricating oil have been investigated in detail in this paper. Main conclusions are drawn as follows:1. Under non-repairing additive condition, the friction coefficient and the wear volume are bigger. So, the self-repairing additives have positive significance to reduce the friction coefficient and the wear of material.2.
