The aim of this paper studies the mechanical analysis of a tower crane which used in large-scale electricity transmission tower. Because the tower crane under the state of vertical hoist burdens various cases of loads, to make sure of the requirements of the strength, stability and safety in the process of the hoist, the strength and stability of the tower crane must be evaluated before it is used. In the present paper, a series of the mechanical tests have been done by the electrometric method to obtain the stress fields of the tower crane under many cases of the loads. The results in the check of its stress strength demonstrate that the tower crane is available to work.In the second part, the paper established the finite element model for the tower crane with MSC.Patran software. Base on the model, the tower crane's nonlinear static stress, bulking and normal modes are analyzed by using the MSC.Nastran.The experimental and numerical results indicate that the structure of the tower crane meets the demands of design in both strength and stability. The tower crane will not be ruined when hoisted. However, some defects in the tower crane about its strength have been found out in the analysis. Some useful suggestions are provided as the reference to improve the crane's mechanical performance and structural design, which are helpful to ensure the safety of this kind of large-scale tower cranes.
