Force-based seismic design is the method adopted in current code (GB 50011-2001). Direct displacement-based seismic design is one of the important methods in performance-based design, it has such advantages that the performance level is more straightforward and the method is easy to use, therefore it gets numerous researchers attention. This paper first introduces the principle of design, calculated step, detailing requirements in current seismic design method. A 8-story reinforced concrete frame structure were designed by using the force-based procedure. Then, the performance of frame structure is divided into three levels: serviceability, life-safety, and collapse protection. The three levels are quantified with story drift ratios, base shear and top displacement of the structure is calculated for three performance levels. For serviceability and collapse protection, the members is proportioned and the appropriate reinforcement selected, and details of seismic design is taken to ensure the deformability of the structure. The calculation results are verified by non-linear static analysis method. The results for two-design method are compared. Analysis result shows the members section reinforcements based on serviceability performance level is close to the force-based seismic design.
