The main purpose of this thesis is to study the interplay of traditional Chinese architecture and music, and to explore how it differs from the Western classical one. The thesis tries to expound on the Chinese correlative thinking and the cosmology that considers"time is leading space". Then two points are illustrated in this thesis:"yue"(musical element) and"he"(seeking harmony) were the key principles in all kinds of traditional Chinese arts; the concept of"temperament and measurement in one"essentially shaped both the traditional architecture and music. Besides providing a contour of the traditional Chinese archi-music interplay, the thesis also digs up four interplay cases, including literature and constructions: Rhapsody on the Zither (3rd cen.), the architectural grammar book of Yingzao Fashi (1102), the Altar of Heaven (1749), and the Zither Rhythm Studio (1757). Either the theory or case studies in this thesis sets up a new way to understand the design methods of traditional Chinese architecture; it may inspire the practice of architecture today, too.
