Flapping-wing Micro Air Vehicle (FMAV) is a new conceptual air vehicle that mimics the flying mode of birds or insects. Research on bionics and aerodynamics indicates that flapping mode is better than rotorcraft and fixed-wing mode when they are about the size of small birds. Now the upsurge of FMAV research begins because of military and civil purposes.Control system is the core of FMAV. This paper mainly researches the control technique of FMAV based on bionics. The mode of FMAV is developed and the controller is designed. Then many flight-test and wind tunnel experiments are done. The control system research includes pose control and path layout. The performance of FMAV control system is as follows: steady and robust; can fly and navigate independently and adjust flying pose based circumstance; can avoid obstacles automatically; image collecting and identifying ability. On pose control aspect, the result of aerodynamics is perfected. The bionic mode of FMAV is developed well by analyzing control mode. This mode holds those excellent features of flying mode. The empennage of FMAV mimics birds. The pose control mode is research deeply with MATLAB. Results indicate that this pose control system is useful and efficient. In order to implement control and decision-making, we do research of path layout and control. The methods of navigation and orientation are analyzed. The distribution of sensors also is researched. The fuzzy controller with speed feedback is designed by researching path layout and avoiding obstacles. The work is helpful to FMAV flying itself.Several control methods are integrated and considered. The control mode is reasonable and practical. FMAV can fly itself in theory. Also many flight-test and wind tunnel experiments are done. Several experiment equipments are designed and manufactured. Finally, the content of this paper are summarized and future research and prospects are discussed.
