The harmonic current pollution from the application of nonlinear loads and current converting equipments badly affects the power system. Therefore, it is urgent to solve the problem by eliminating the harmonic. The instantaneous reactive power theory raised in 1980s gives an effective way to harmonic current detecting. For the shortcoming of LC filters being more and more serious and the technology of power electronic developing very rapidly, eliminating harmonic dynamically by using Active Power Filters (APFs) becomes an important method. So the study on Active Power Filters is of great importance. After a brief introduction of the background and classification of APFs, the method of detecting harmonics based on instantaneous reactive power theory is studied in this paper. The theoretic analysis is accomplished on the circuit topology, principle, harmonic detecting method, control method and circuit designing of Parallel Hybrid Active Power Filter (PHAPF). To examine the validity of the controlling system of the PHAPF and understand the controlling rules furthermore, this paper simulates the PHAPF with SimPower Systems Blockset in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The results demonstrate the availability of this method. The affection of Low Pass Filter (LPF) on harmonic detecting effect is also studied in this paper, which may provide help to the designing of harmonic detecting circuits. The studies in this paper have some guidance on the exploitation of the active power filter experimental system.
