It is significant to study water distribution system which not only relates the living standard of the city inhabitants, but also concerns the economic efficiency and the prospect of the water supply profession. But at present our country also has some defects in the aspect of water supply system fundamental research and the technical innovations, compared with some developed countries. It restricts the reformation of the management mode that would changes from the traditional one to the modern one. Thus the security and reliability of water supply system and the problem of resources waste can't be resolved. Therefore, in this paper, the related link of optimal operation of the water supply system will be researched.The engineering research can not carry on smoothly without the good mathematical method and instruments. Genetic Algorithms and Neural Network obtained more attention recently and have been made use in many scientific areas with good effectiveness. They also will be more frequently used in the study of water supply system. In this paper, the two methods are researched and improved in some relative aspects. The example indicated the effect is good when the algorithm is improved.Correct policy decision can not be done without scientific forecast. Mainly discussed in this paper is the feasibility of application of gray system theory in long term load forecasting. Besides, urban water consumption forecasted with gray system theory and neural network is provided. It can avoid directly inspecting the interaction between the factors and quantity. It can also reduce the data random noise and improve accuracy.The prerequisite and necessary condition for optimal operation is to estimate the state of the system rationally. According to the defects of some methods of hydraulic computation currently used to resolve the pi pe network microcosmic model, more user-friendly and widely-used method is provided in this paper. Some merits and attention to resolve working state estimation with genetic algorithm is summarized. A detailed calculation methods and steps to optimally lay out pressure monitoring nodes with gray relation analysis are analyzed. The development of research on macroeconomic model and some problems of various models in practical application are studied. Besides, a simple, reasonable and easy calculated macrocosmic model is brought out in this paper.
