The trailers are one of the important equipments of road transport of goods. They contain several distinct characteristics: big bearing capacity, high strength, heavy weight, however, they also lie in high cost, bad vehicle fuel economy of the full-trailer towing. So, the light-weight designs of frame structure are very necessary. The main method of lightweight design is structure optimization design, and furthermore, the designers can obtain some reasonable concept designs from the structure topology optimization, which are benefit to reduce the weight of structure. This paper introduces the topology optimization method which applies the trailer frame.There are two innovation points. Firstly, the impact of the platform floor is considered. Secondly, the cartings which are limited by wheel base can not change their position. The initial structure contains the optimization region which optimizes the configuration of beams and cantilever beams, and the non optimization region which contains platform floor and carlings, so the model is very complex and not easy to be solved. The simplifying and solution strategies are proposed to solve the problem. A model of topology optimization for the frame of the semi-trailer under stress constraint is presented, the thickness of the topology optimization sheet is the design variable, and the minimum volume of the sheet is the optimization objective during the optimization process, then the optimal distribution of the beams and cantilever beams is determined.According to the optimization method, the finite element analysis program of the initial structure is realized by APDL language, the optimization calculation is realized by FORTRAN language, and then the drawing program is realized by C++ language. Finally, the configurations of beams and cantilever beams of a semi-trailer frame under bending condition and twisting condition are obtained by applying this method.
