Harmonic gear drive is a new-type technique that has been developed in recent decades and is made up of a flexspline, rigidity gear and harmonic generator. It transfers motion and power depending on the flexible deformation of the flexspline. The design of harmonic gear drive involves many factors, so the design is complex. The harmonic gear with the design in traditional technology already meets the challenge. But the design parameter is not the best and is inefficiency and costly. All shortcomings make it so difficult that the technology of the harmonic gear drive is generalized and applied. The study in the design of harmonic gear drive is important and valuable to exploder good and effect reducer of harmonic gear drive. This paper studyed three parts of the theory of engagement and optimize design and the virtual design. The next part is the main research:(1) On the base of the principle and theory of engagement of the harmonic gear drive, this paper expounded the composition and working of harmonic gear. The harmonic kinematics was analyzed and flexspline of harmonic gear of deformation's shape and measure under differ depression were discussed. Four ways of researching harmonic gear drive were expatiated. The influence under area joggle and needle joggle of harmonic gear drive was studyed. The single-stage drive efficiency of harmonic gear drive was discussed.(2) The formula of harmonic gear design was researched. The main inactivation form and check reckon of harmonic gear were discussed. To improve drive– efficiency of harmonic gear, the formula of design was given out.
