In natural rivers, most of the reaches tend to be compound channels, which are composed of main channel and one or two floodplains. In low water period, the main channel carries water. And there is compound channel above bankfull stages in high water period. Now, more and more floodplains are utilized for the development of state economy and increase in population, so compoud channels and dike safety have received considerable attention. The study of flow within compoud channels is complex, and it is important for river regulation works and flood control project.First, a general review of compound channel hydraulics has been given in the following points: flow mechanisms , flow resistance, division of flow between main river and floodplains, lateral distribution of velocity and Lateral distribution of boundary shear stress. Then a overview of 1-D and 2-D computational methods for overbank flow has been done.Numerical simulation is adopted to study the flow of compound sections, and has been used for calculating bed-load transport.
